Auditory
System
This system, which also houses one's
vestibular system, refers not only to our ability to
hear but our ability to listen and understand the
information given to us from our environment.
Floor
Time/DIR (Developmental,
Individual-Difference, Relationship-Based)
“A model of addressing a child’s developmental
challenges through relationship and affect, focusing on
the child’s individual differences, and developmental
levels (a child’s ability to stay engaged, express
mutual pleasure and attention, to engage in complex
problem solving and symbolic play, and to link ideas).
The cornerstone of the DIR model is “Floortime.”
A warm, intimate way of relating to children. A DIR/Floortime
philosophy means engaging, respecting, and getting in
tune with children in order to help them elaborate
through gestures, words, and pretend play what is on
their minds. DIR/Floortime is a process that can be used
to help support children’s emotional and social
development.
During Floortime sessions, the emphasis is on following
the child’s lead and playing at the child’s
developmental level.
The goals are:
• Encouraging attention and intimacy
• Facilitating two-way communicating
• Encouraging the use of feelings and ideas
• Logical thought”

Gustatory
System
This system refers to one’s ability to
process and discriminate taste.
Motor Planning
The ability to formulate, organize, and execute
an idea into an action.
Olfactory
System
This system refers to our ability to perceive
and process smells from our environment.
Proprioceptive System
Through the use of our muscles, ligaments and
joints this system helps us know about our body position
and movement without the use of our visual system. We
gain this information through “heavy work” and movement
to let us know where our body is in space.
SAMONAS
Spectrally Activated Music of Optimal Natural
Structure.
This is a modality that can be used both in the clinic
and part of one’s “sensory diet” as a way of
intensifying stimulation to one’s inner ear/vestibular
system.
“Spectrally activated sounds are
like sparkling water,
like sunlight reflected by a diamond
like a firework of colors and sensations…..
…. they bring the glance and vitality of nature into
everyday life
a practical model for listening enhancement.”

Sensory Diet
A sensory diet is created from a child’s
unique, individual “Sensory Profile.” It is a means of
feeding sensory experiences into a child’s life on a
daily basis.
Sensory Profile
An explanation of how a child is taking in and
processing information through their senses both
individually and integrated. This is created by an
Occupational Therapist after a child has had an
evaluation.
Tactile System
This system provides one with information about
his/her environment through the use of one’s skin
receptors. We internalize this information to be able to
help us know when to protect and/or discriminate when
needed.
THERAPEUTIC LISTENING
"Therapeutic Listening® is an evidence-backed protocol
that combines a sound-based intervention with sensory
integrative activities to create a comprehensive program
that is effective for diverse populations with sensory
challenges. Therapeutic Listening can impact sensory
modulation, attention, behavior, postural organization,
and speech and language difficulties. Trained therapists
learn to use modulated CDs to set up programs for
clients in homes, schools and clinics.
Listening is a function
of the entire brain; when we listen, we listen with the
whole body." www.vitallinks.net
Vestibular
System
This system provides one with information
needed to know where one’s body is in space through
his/her inner ear. Information from this system lets us
know three things: our relation to gravity, whether we
are still or moving, and the speed and direction in
which we are going.
Visual System
“Vision is the ability to get meaning from
eyesight.” KidTherapy 9/99 This system has two important
purposes:
Perception: The ability to perceive and take in
information from one’s environment through his/her eyes.
Motor accuracy: The ability to produce an accurate
image, which is used to understand his/her environment. |
